Professional privilege tax filing must be completed by June 1.


The Tennessee Department of Revenue is reminding members of the 22 professional groups required to file and pay the annual Professional Privilege Tax by the June 1 deadline. The department's simple online tax filing and payment options on www.TN.gov/revenue allow filers to submit their personal information, choose their profession, make payments and receive confirmation within minutes.


"The alternative to electronic filing on the department's website is well-designed and modified with taxpayers in mind," said Reagan Farr, commissioner of the Department of Revenue. "Fileing online with Revenue is not only easy and time-saving for filers. Online services allow the department to process returns more accurately and quickly.


Professional Privilege Tax Payment: Accountant Agents (Securities) Architects Lawyers Audiologists Brokers Dealers (Agents) chiropractors; Dental Engineers Investment Advisors; Landscape Architect Lobest Ophthalmologist Osteopathic Doctors Pharmacist; Physician Podiatrists; Psychologists Principal brokers of real estate; Speech pathologist; Sports Agents And veterinarians.


Customers can pay by credit card or EFT transaction by checking accounts on the department's website www.TN.gov/revenue. MasterCard, American Express and Discover Card are accepted and a corresponding 2.49% processing fee will be charged. All online tax filing applications, including Individual Income Tax, Franchise and Excise Tax, Sales Tax and Consumer Use Tax, now offer both credit card and EFT payment options on the department's website.


To help taxpayers comply with electronic filing, the Department of Revenue provides computer access to its offices in Chattanooga, Knoxville, Jackson, Johnson City, Memphis and Nashville. The department also offers an electronic commerce hotline at (866) 368-6374 to assist taxpayers and tax practitioners. Callers outside the Nashville area and the state should dial (615) 253-0704. All taxpayer data, whether on paper or electronic, is confidential data recorded in the Revenue Department that is protected under Tennessee law.


The Revenue Department is responsible for the collection of state tax laws and motor vehicle titles and registration laws established by the legislature and the taxes and fees associated with these laws. The revenue department collects about 92% of the total tax revenue of the state. During the fiscal year 2007-2008, the department collected $ 11.2 billion in state taxes and fees. In addition to collecting state taxes, the department collected $ 1.9 billion in local sales taxes for local governments during the 2007-2008 fiscal year.
